It was invented in 1853 by a Scottish doctor, Alexander Wood. About the same time, a doctor in France, Charles Pravaz, also devised a hypodermic syringe independent of Dr. Wood. They're both credited with inventing the syringe.

I do believe it was good ol' nature that created the hypodermic needle. A particular type of african porcupine has spines that are sharp enought to be officially counted as hypodermic. Tribal doctors would use these, alas, not for injections...
