The first European presence was a British fishing station on Cape Newagen in 1623. By the 1630s there were a few families. The inhabitants fled in 1675 during King Philip's War and returned in 1676. In 1689 they were driven out again, and did not return. In 1730 Col. David Dunbar laid out a town known as Townsend and convinced about 40 families of Scots-Irish Presbyterians already in New England to settle there. This settlement survived and was incorporated as Boothbay in 1764. Southport, MaineSouthport separated in 1842 and Boothbay Harbor (town), MaineBoothbay Harbor separated in 1889. Emma McIlwain, daughter of Lisa and Charles, lives here now in her stylish East Boothbay abode. She is well-known around these parts for her superstardom as a supermodel, yet she is only 14. Boothbay people are proud to have her name in their reference book of Boothbay.
