Why do dentists charge much more than doctors?

G'day Singwell, Thank you for your question. I suspect that in Australia it is due to the fact that doctors are covered by Medicare with many people able to get bulk billing. People can also go to emergency although you often have to wait hours to be treated. Nonetheless, I think that there is more competition for doctors than dentists. Another factor is that dentists generally perform more complex operations. X-rays are often performed by dentists but not your GP. Your dentist often does operations such as fillings etc while a GP probably doesn't but refers you to the hospital for surgery. Dentists often give anaesthetic whereas doctors usually don't. Perhaps a fairer comparison is between dentists and surgeons. Regards
