I would tell him/her that their parent is not incorrect, first of all. I would say that it is important to practice our skills such as addition/subtraction, etc. but that as a teacher I have a lot of grading and lesson plans and such to prepare for the entire class. Sometimes we need shortcuts and have to use helpful tools when there are more important priorities such as teaching students.

If you can use a calculator, then you understand your maths. You can't get an answer from a calculator if you don't use the correct formula. People who say things like that do not understand either maths or calculators.

Next time an adult says something silly like that, ask them why they drive everywhere when they have a perfectly good set of legs that will get them everywhere they want to go.

They'll say because it's faster, and so is a calculator. They use technology and you use technology.
