  • The act that established the requirement, The Commercial Motor Vehicle Safety Act of 1986 was signed into law in October 1986, but the CDL was not instituted until April 1992. In my opinion, that was one of the worst days in trucking history. The CDL is partially responsible for the current state of the trucking indusry.
  • In New Jersey, an 'articulated' license was established in about 1978. You needed it to drive a tractor-trailer. Before that, you could drive anything except motorcyles and school buses with a basic drivers' license. Double trailers weren't legal in NJ until 1984.
