Just do it, she can only say yes, no or maybe. Either way, you will live to see another day if she says no. Be polite and approach her with confidence.

Get to know her as a friend so you can talk openly with her like any other friend and get comfortable around her and just go for it and ask her when the time is right. Be kind and polite and stay cool if she says no. It may feel like the end of the world but it really isn't. You hopefully will gain confidence through facing what you find difficult.
