  • Traditionally, people would interlock their fingers and place their hands behind the head or neck when doing sit-ups or crunches, but a much safer way is to keep the hands flat on the chest or stomach while you do your exercises. The reason for this is that as the person becomes fatigued, there is a tendency to "cheat" by pulling with the hands/arms, thereby increasing the possibility of injury to the neck. Keep your hands on the chest to place more weight away from the fulcrum (harder) or on the stomach to place the weight closer to the fulcrum (easier).
  • If not on your chest your hands should be LIGHTLY cupping your ears or just behind them and your elbows should be pointing directly right and left (not up towards the ceiling). This prevents you from pulling and straining your neck and from cheating yourself out of a good ab workout. This is the way I did it when I was in HS and my abs -were- fantastic.
