I think it's the ideals that it strives to live up to. Even when it makes horrible, glaring mistakes those ideals eventually win out in the end. Compared to other nations it is a shinning light of freedom offered to all who desire it. It is by no means perfect and it has a long way to go; but, I think it can accomplish it's ideals if given the chance.

Many foreigners think they know what the USA is like from watching films and TV News. The USA is so vast and diverse, it is hard to generalize about its people, Economy, customs and living conditions. Most of what gets exported about the USA – good and bad – is either fiction or distorted. Some of the things that appear to be good are bad. Some of the apparently bad things are really good. Some things that appear either bad or good can be much worse or better than they appear in the Media. I think it is great for foreigners to visit, work or attend school in the USA for an extended period of time.

Having lived for a long time in and out of the US I have to say there are a few things that make it special. Unfortunately those things are mostly theory which are too often subverted or circumvented. But: The political system that allows you to vote for individuals rather than parties. In most of the world the Parliamentary system puts the focus on the parties. The short constitution that is a guide to how laws should work - it doesn't get into every possible specific like the last attempt at an EU constitution that ran over 200 pages and dealt with things like the size of sausages. One thing that surprised me when I realized it - the right to sue in civil court and have the process dealt with quickly. Having said all that I'll add that the US - or many of its citizens have this pain in the neck idea that they are blessed or somehow superior to the rest of the world and that gives them all kinds of rights outside its own borders. As much as the US does have it's specialness - it is still just one nation among many - not the biggest, not the best educated, not the richest per capita, not the safest... just one among many. +5

Their unique high standard of human culture and education. And their unbeatable big economy and the great people you find only in America. Nowhere in thed world you find people who are that kind of perfect in any sense as in the USA. Americans are indeed the most outstanding people in the world. So I have only mere admiration for America and its great people.
