  • Normally at that age the mom is more than willing to part with their children. I breed Chihuahua's myself and have never had any problem with the mom acting different after the pups are gone. She actually acts relieved not to have so many puppies chasing around after her still trying to nurse off of her. When you're pups have found loving homes you just hand them over to the new owners, there is no special way to take them from their mama's. I doubt your mother dog will have any kind of reaction if you wait until the pups are that old. Some times, when the puppies are a lot younger, the mom can whine and look around for the puppy for a couple of days. If you wait until they're three months though you shouldn't have any problems what so ever.
  • I couldn't agree more with Courtni. At 12 weeks, Mom is DONE. She's taught her kids all the lessons she can to help them understand the basic rules of polite and acceptable behavior. (I used to use our Mom dog to help train the puppies to go outside for potty, since they'd follow her anywhere! lol) Granted, I'm sure the new owners still had to potty train, puppies in new homes go through a fair amount of stress because everything is DIFFERENT. And any puppy or even an adult dog that is fully trained CAN HAVE potty accidents when placed in a stressful (changed) situation, but at least they had some bit of a clue that going outside for potty was a VERY GOOD (praise/treat) THING! Waiting the full 12 weeks, you are really giving these pups the most optimum head start in their training future! You have helped to set them up to be successful in every way you could. Hopefully, their new humans will carry on with Positive Reinforcement training (+R) and they will become all they were meant to be! I wish I could give you MORE POINTS FOR YOUR FANTASTIC AND RESPONSIBLE PRACTICE!
