Ofcourse they can have sex, but it increases a risk of infections. It's also just one of many excuses for not having sex when they are not in the mood. Its easier to say that then to say "sorry, I'm not in the mood" when a counter answer can be "I'll get you in the mood". A man cannot say "Just say the word and I'll take your period away" ;).

It is really rather messy when the girl is on her period. All that blood does not stay up in there it comes out, and stains things *sheets, your partner* Its a big hassle to clean up all that.
