Are manatees really gentle giants?

Yes. I have lived in Florida my whole life (33 years) and I live close to a power plant that uses steam to generate electricity. During the winter months, they all hang out there because the water is nice and warm. In Apollo Beach where I live, they will swim right up to you and try to play with you. There is absolutely nothing to be afraid of. They might startle you at first because they are so big, but they are like giant puppies. It's too bad how they get killed by so many people in boats by the propellers. They swim at the topo of the water and people who are not careful fly past them on the boats and the propellers chop up their backs and it is a slow and painful death.
