He doesn't have to do anything he doesn't want to. However, having been a missionary in this exact position 15 years ago, it sure makes things a lot easier for the missionary when he doesn't have to worry/think about a girlfriend at home, regardless of whether or not she's a member of the church. Missionaries are happiest and most effective in their work when they can focus on serving others and teaching, and not wonder if their girlfriend is still waiting for them, dating others behind their back, etc. In my case, my girlfriend dated during my mission, joined the church on her own curiosity, then we got back together and have been married for 11 years. Now to the bigger question of Mormon vs. non-Mormon, the church encourages its members to get married in one of its many temples, in order to make the marriage binding after this life. Since only Mormons who are living church standards can enter the temples, this obviously precludes you two getting married in the temple. It looks like this may be a good time for a long discussion.

no, stay as you are.

if you are a true Mormon you know the rules. Mormons marry Mormons. I hope you are not one of those Mormons who marry several women...that's a sick way to live your life. There are many religions in this world and you dont have to be a Mormon...if you love this girl, marry her outside the Mormon church and live a decent life with one woman.

How about you stay with the girl and go travel the world instead.

No. But im sure some would say that it was a positive thing even if the girlfriend/fiancee was Mormon. From the time a missionary is 'set apart'/is ordained/becomes a missionary they can have no contact with the opposite sex - apart from hugging their biological sister(s), mother, grandmother etc goodby. Even a close female friend cannot hug or touch them. The belief, and it is expressed in other responses, that you cannot be a good/the best missionary without fully 100% focus on missionary work/the Lord/the Spirir etc. So all other relationships become severed/put on hold for 2years/18months for women. Even thinking about family can 'detract' from missionary work and this is one reason why you can only speak to them twice a year for 45mins each time. Sometimes relationships are never the same when the missionary returns, for example with friends, family members, etc because those relationships have not been developing with the change people go through over time.

I don't see why. Joseph Smiths god told him all churches where apostate and the whores of Babylon. And he joined the Methodist church 3 years later. So, he was a Methodist while making up the actual books you will use to deceive people with. My point is, Joe did what ever he wanted and when it became an issue, he had further revelation to justify his actions. Use his example to compel your cause.
