Depends where you live.
But if you are in the expected hardest hit areas evacuation might be the thing.
But - if you stay at home, stock up on:
batteries (and flashlights & a radio) and candles /lamps&fuel - if possible even Mobil phone batts.
water (fill the tub, sinks, pails, pots, etc) - you'll need water for flushing the toilet but only do it when necessary and try to use water used for washing something.
food that doesn't need to be refrigerated or cooked (fruit and veg last several days - cook meats and hard boil eggs in your fridge - they will last 2-3 at least
friends - invite people over to ride it out - especially if there are shut-ins in your neighborhood. Not only will this help them - maybe save their lives - but it will help you. Camping out on the floor and all that makes it much more fun - really.
Books, board games (long ones you never play otherwise) and non-electric distractions / entertainments
Now - if the power goes out - eat all dairy first - yogurts etc. Take them out of the fridge immediately and eat. Move other perishables (meats you've cooked) to the freezer quickly and don't open it again for 2 days. Keep the doors shut as much as possible - no browsing. Maybe even organize the fridge and freezer first so you know where things are and in what order you'll take them out.
Most cheeses and eggs (if unbroken - eat any hard boiled eggs that cracked right away - they will go bad in a day or so) will last un-refrigerated for weeks - no problem.
And mostly remember - you're likely to get power back within 2 days. A week is possible but not bloody likely and if you're out that long help is likely to come for you. You aren't gonna be stranded on an island alone for months or anything.
Most of the advice above is to help keep your head before it hits - it will probably not be so bad that you actually need to live off it.
And lastly? As strange as it may sound - enjoy it. If you're lucky enough to be under the eye - go out and experience it - it's amazing. Do have people with you. It can be romantic, it can be fun with neighbors you never knew before, it can be empowering if you do help a shut in or otherwise disadvantaged person / family...
If you're worried about flooding and those horrible images of people stuck on roofs then get a good quality inflatable boat - with oars not engine (the screw will get fowled in all the debris in the water) or life vests and also make sure you have access to your roof. But that is really a rare event that makes the news but most people need not worry about. I've been in several hurricanes and never seen water above ankle deep. But if you live in a zone where it's a realistic danger - evacuate. Plain and simple.
And write us back after the show.
