  • As of the census of 2000, there were 60,690 people, 24,188 households, and 15,867 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,084.3/km sq (2,808.2/mi sq). There were 25,913 housing units at an average density of 463.0/km sq (1,199.0/mi sq). The racial makeup of the city was 88.94% White, 7.55% African American, 0.29% Native American, 0.45% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 1.46% from Race (United States Census)other races, and 1.28% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.58% of the population. There were 24,188 households out of which 31.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.5% were Marriagemarried couples living together, 15.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 34.4% were non-families. 29.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 11.7% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size was 3.02.
