    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Sock puppets were first invented in 1808 by Laurent Mourguet when he became a dentist, or "puller of teeth," and needed to attract new customers. To do so he set up a small stage at his market stall and put on performances using puppets over his hands. Previously puppets were only controlled with strings.
