They were meant as cautionary tales. Rhymes were use because it made them easier to remember because, "knowing is half the battle."

    Once upon a time...

Society didn't try to wrap children in a protective covering of falsehoods and fakery.
Life was tough and we didn't pretend otherwise.
    Stupid choices had terrible consequences.
And they didn't worry about harming little Jack's self-esteem by telling him to be nimble and quick so as not to burn his ass on the candlestick.
These days the rhyme would be more like:

Jack be lazy and be a half wit
The fire department will handle the candle stick.

I have a suggestion...Mother Goose. You can even listen to the full original
prose selection by Frank L. Baum, if you know where.
Fables and nursery rhymes ya got to remember get pared down and abridged
and condensed...a lot. And people love to use those pared down versions for
    their own evil purposes.
BTW, if you read Mother Goose, there is a whole story or fable behind the
    one stanza.

Alot of these nursery rhymes were actually based on true events (in some cases a bit loosely).

on a serious note....and that is odd for me...most of these rhymes were written almost like little editorials about leaders, or tragic events of the times. Ring Around the Rosie was in reference to the plague....

Ring around the rosie's the worst one. It's about people dying of plague. I guess song helps people through ugly parts of history. Plus, kids are very cruel in their honesty and innocence.

some times good things come from bad...for instance...Humpty Dumpty's fall was able to bring all the kings horses and men together for a common, nobel cause.

After Jack fell...Jill came tumbling after...sounds like love to me.

as to the baby cradle and all....there were no reported injuries...it's a maricle

This is planted in the subconscious of mind of babies/children ready to explode when they turn into mean adults.

a lot of nursey rhymes were actually not intended for children but were a means of social commentary, ring a ring o roses was about the black death and so on.
