I'm 15 and my boyfriend is 17, soon to be 18. My parents are very overprotective and have sworn to call the cops, but we're not having sex. Is it legal for us to date in the state of Oregon?

• No, it's not legal for them to date, since her parents have forbidden it. Even in Oregon, he can be charged and prosecuted as an adult at age 17.
  Cynical as it sounds, I have to agree with Pasobrio. He may be he exception, but he SMELLS like a sexual predator on young girls.

• If Oregon law did not contemplate kisses as being actionable, then lips ARE NOT intimate body parts. This is how our laws are interpreted. That is, they look to the legislative intent.

• In Oregon? Indeed it does. However, since she is 15 and he is "not more than three years older" [quoted from Oregon state law], then her parents would have a hard time making a charge against him stick. I still "think what I thunk before," that he's a suspicious character, and probably a sexual predator. As I said in my last answer [i.e., not comment], why else would her parents be so dead set against him?

• Oregon does not have a dating law. The law you are referring to is most likely the statutory rape law. And statutory rape is a crime whether or not the parents consent or not. And the guy is only two years older than the girl. Hardly a pedophile make.

• Honestly, just because he is two, or maybe just one and a half, years older it doesn't make him a sexual predator. I started going out with my finance when he was 17 and I was only 15 at the time. Goodness, their still in high school. I highly doubt it's something like that. Now, I will be getting married in 11 days. Just because there's an age difference it doesn't make it a crime.

• OK, it isn't against the law for these two kids to spend time together.
  The law doesn't regulate dating, but it does regulate the sexual activities of minors.
  Her parents say no, and she's only 15. Why they disapprove is immaterial. They said no.

• by saying "screw the law", you're telling her that it's OKAY to put her boyfriend in a situation that could be potentially life-destroying for him. When he turns 18, he could very well be charged with all sorts of indecencies with a minor - even for something as seemingly innocent as a kiss. How would YOU feel, if you had an adult boyfriend who was arrested, sent to prison, then made to register as a sex offender for the rest of his life? A tad guilty, I'd suspect. That's exactly what happens to plenty of young men because their minor girlfriends take advice from people like you, with no idea of how the law works, and say "screw the law".

• I'm going with Doobie on this. What you are suggesting she do is illegal and he will be nailed for it. Also you must not realize that any touching between them is considered gross sexual impossition of a minor and sex between them would be statory rape. That's sex with a consenting minor by the way. He'll be labled as a sexually oriented offender with one and a sexually oriented preditor with the other. That's for life by the way.

• Please tell me that your first couple of sentences aren't true. I've never seen an answer from you that sounded cynical, as the last couple of sentences did. Perhaps he's a decent kid and they aren't planning to have sex until much later. I know I'm quite a lot older than most people on Answerbag but I remember a time when long engagements and no intercourse before marriage was quite common.

• Nope, it's the law, darling. Mess with a 15 year old and say "Hello, to Bubba." Especially if her parents don't like you. The cops will be on you faster then white on rice. Sorry to say, not any more. I heard a conversation between the neighbor girls last night that would make your hair turn grey. They're not even 15 yet. They were talking more sex then most adults. As my fiance put it you used to have to work to get a kiss. Now all you have to do is walk in a room and flop it out and the girls are fighting over who gets to do you first. No names needed. It's down right frightening. They all think STDs are curable including AIDs and if you get pregnant you can play with the baby like a baby doll till you get bored or just abort it. No big deal.

• Thanks for explaining. I know that kids today are far more sexually active and knowledgeable than once was the case, but I still think it's sad that the police can become involved in an innocent relationship, and Zandra says it is. It's a very strange thing that if she lived in some other states she wouldn't have this problem because age of consent is a state, rather than federal, matter and in some states she would have already reached the age of consent.
