Depends on where you live, but in most places you would get a ticket and have to pay a hefty fine.

Depending on the situation if you get into an accident (regardless of fault) you could be arrested and jailed. Even if you simply get pulled over by the cops, you are likey to have your car impounded while they give you a ride downtown to explain why you were driving on a suspended registration. And then there are the points and fines that get added on top of the drama.

I have never actually heard of that law, at least not in tennessee. but, driving a vehicle without proper registration plates is a traffic violation. your vehicle can be towed to the impound lot and a citation issued. knowing that you have suspended license plates. upfront, will definetely cost you more in traffic court. it shows intent. check your local laws.
