The pitcher throws ball four after he has thrown strike three (umpire has lost count). Is the batter save at first or out if appealed.

Batter swings at third strike and misses, but catcher drops ball, which batter knocks fair on follow through. Catcher throws him out. Call?

You're reading Does an infield fly rule apply to a fly ball to a pitcher near the mound that calls for the ball or catcher in fair territory or does it only apply to the infield, which I assume is the dirt area from 1st base to 3rd base?

This is correct. Infield refers to the players that can catch the ball with a normal effort.
