Tie your fishing lure on your line. The type of lure you use depends on the type of rod you are using, the type of water you are fishing in and the size and type of fish you wish to catch.
Cast your lure out behind your boat. Trolling is different from regular fishing because it involves dragging the lure behind a moving boat. Once your lure and line are clear of the boat, you can begin moving. The force of the boat's movement will pull your lure through the water, attracting the attention of the fish.
Watch your rod tip carefully for any sudden movements. If you see your rod jerking, you might have a fish or a snag. Set the hook by quickly pulling the rod upward. If you feel continued action, you likely have a fish. Reel it in carefully and pull it into the boat. If the lure feels stuck, you are likely snagged. Stop the boat's movement and clear the snag or cut your line.
