I think they are often a scam for the woman to get to come to the USA, assuming she lives outside the USA. I also think they are risky from a standpoint of really working out in the long term. It is a throwback to the 19th century, and most women from modern countries would not ever think about being in a "relationship" like this unless they were desperate to get away from their country.

I'd say they were a dreadful using of each other for their own purposes, except I know of one very happy, long-lasting marriage which came of one. The man turned down a couple potential brides upon meeting them first, but the final one he married, had kids with, and is getting old with. *shrug* It can work just as much as arranged marriages work sometimes.
