I think "The Grapes of Wrath" is probably his best-known novel, since it is often taught in high school English classes. It tells the story of a family who migrates from Oklahoma to California during the Great Depression. "Of Mice and Men" and "East of Eden" are also very well-known Steinbeck novels, though. My personal favorite is "Tortilla Flat," but that one's not quite as famous as the others I have mentioned.

http://www.steinbeck.org/Grapes.html The Grapes of Wrath: "The novel was controversial when it was published. Banned in certain places in the United States, it was burned twice in Salinas." The book was notorious for a scene near the end that qualifies as one of the most beautifully written in literature. Then as today, bluenoses wanted to govern what we read.
