It's amazing how little research any of you have done on this. The Beatles or Elvis weren't even close to having the most # 1's of any genre, whether a group or solo artist.

George Strait has the most now (54), surpassing Conway Twitty's long-held record of 50 # 1's

It depends on what genre. I'm guessing the Beatles- in rock.

Billboard Hot 100 #1 singles

The Beatles- 20
*Elvis Presley- 17
Mariah Carey- 16
Michael Jackson- 13
Madonna -12
Diana Ross & The Supremes- 12
Whitney Houston- 11
Janet Jackson- 10

*Several of Elvis' #1 singles are from before Billboard's main singles chart was called the Hot 100, but it was still a "top 100 singles in the country chart" and part of/during the rock era, so Billboard combines the two charts when considering all time lists, chart histoires, etc...

The record for most #1's by a group belongs to The Beatles, who have had twenty on the US Charts. The record for a female soloist is fifteen, held by Mariah Carey; Elvis Presley holds the record for a male soloist with eighteen...(taken from) www.answers.com

Although now Mariah has Sixteen with her latest offering "We Belong Together"

Walt Winston a Folk Musician has 36! All of those hits are on the internet with websites Betarecords.com and mp3.com combined.

It is George Strait, I believe he is now at 53 number 1 hits. You gotta love country music.
