Separate the moss into manageable sections. Wash the moss outdoors in a bucket with a mixture of 1 tsp. dishwashing detergent for every gallon of warm water. Agitate the moss with your hands to remove bugs and debris. Remove the moss from the washing mixture and rinse it in a bucket of clean water. Pull the moss from the bucket and place on a table (or other flat surface) in the sun until the moss is dry.
Separate the moss into manageable sections. Boil the moss for about two minutes and drain the water. Remove the moss using tongs or rubber, housecleaning gloves. Lay the moss on an absorbent towel on a flat surface to dry. An unpleasant odor will occur while boiling the moss, open the windows for ventilation.
Lightly mist the moss before using it in a craft project. Misting will help prevent dust collecting on the moss. Use a fan or duster to remove dust that collects over time.
