Yep. Seeing excessive gore makes them much less scary. I think the scariest movies use your mind against you and make you think "What the ___ is going on?" --- particularly with a scenario you might really encounter in the normal course of your day.

No. Not if the movie is made by someone awesomely creative. It is not easy to scare me, but I saw the Descent a couple months back and it gave me nightmares.

Not while Hannibal still thinks that human flesh is tasty and that human brains make a good appetizer.

I would say that at the time when a person can think logically is the time when these movies are no longer scary.

Horror films that feature unlikely situations like monsters or whatever are often seen to be less effective as a person gets older. However films that are about situations that a viewer can realistically find themselves in - like being in a cave/in a wood at night/lost in their car etc etc, often remain much more effective because you know that can and does actually happen. Serial killers are also scary because they are real. Robert Bloch, the writer of Psycho, once said that the most frightening thing about a serial killer is that it could be the person sitting next to you. I often remember that when I'm sat on the bus :)

I am at that point now. I may jump if someone comes out of nowhere but not scared anymore.

No i dont think so

Yes and no. Hollywood is becoming less original with the story lines. The same stuff over and over is no longer scary. There is an art to making a truly scary movie and stranded teens, a stalker and gore aren't it. Some of the Asian films are taking a fresh approach and actually generating a chill or two. Of course, Hollywood is remaking these and (with a few exceptions) are messing them up by applying their same techniques to them. The Ring, The Grudge, The Eye, Dark Water and Pulse were all originally Asian. Hollywood did pretty well with the Ring and Dark water.

It has happened to me. There is enough sick people, enough violence in real life...I don't have to go to a movie to see more.
-
No. A good horror movie will always scare me. That's why I love them.
