  • The Pope I refer to Astaroth's answer here http://www.answerbag.com/q_view.php/4073 "The previous answer is totally correct, but the Pope (Head of the Church) is missing. The salutation is "His Holiness"."
  • The Pope is Christ's representative on earth. "The Roman Pontiff---the successor of St. Peter as the Bishop of Rome and head of the Church on earth-has full and supreme authority over the universal Church in matters pertaining to faith and morals (teaching authority), discipline and government (jurisdictional authority). The Pope's authority is on issues concerning faith and morals." Jesus does not tell Peter that he will replace him; He only states that Peter will be given authority and power to act in His name. In Mt. 16:18-19, Jesus made it clear that he wanted Peter to lead his church on earth. (Mt. 16:18-19): And I say also unto Thee, that thou art Peter, and upon this rock I will build my church; and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt bind on earth shall be bound in heaven: and whatsoever thou shalt loosen earth shall be loosed in heaven. http://www.anawim.pair.com/CATHOLICS/the%20pope.htm
  • As Vatican II remarked, it is a charism the pope "enjoys in virtue of his office, when, as the supreme shepherd and teacher of all the faithful, who confirms his brethren in their faith (Luke 22:32), he proclaims by a definitive act some doctrine of faith or morals. Therefore his definitions, of themselves, and not from the consent of the Church, are justly held irreformable, for they are pronounced with the assistance of the Holy Spirit, an assistance promised to him in blessed Peter." It is the Holy Spirit who prevents the pope from officially teaching error, and this charism follows necessarily from the existence of the Church itself. If, as Christ promised, the gates of hell will not prevail against the Church then it must be protected from fundamentally falling into error and thus away from Christ. It must prove itself to be a perfectly steady guide in matters pertaining to salvation. Of course, infallibility does not include a guarantee that any particular pope won’t "neglect" to teach the truth, or that he will be sinless, or that mere disciplinary decisions will be intelligently made. It would be nice if he were omniscient or impeccable, but his not being so will fail to bring about the destruction of the Church http://www.answerbag.com/a_view.php/38400 So according to these teachings of the Catholic Church the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, since anything he says regarding the teachings of the faith is inspired by the holy spirit and is infallible, including particular doctrines such as the trinity, hell-fire, eternal torment, immortality of the soul, even if it contradicts the teachings of the Bible? For example the Bible says "the soul that is sinning, it itself shall die", but the Catholic church says the soul is immortal, even after the resurrection of the righteous and the wicked there is a second death from which there is no resurrection possible, eternal destruction, but again the Catholic church says they will live forever, in hell suffering eternally, but still living, just in a different realm, just as the resurrected they say will "live" in heaven. Oh yeah, there's another point of "infallibility", the Bible says the "meek will inherit the earth, and the righteous will be the ones left over in it", and that the a new earth will be formed, it also says that when Gods word goes out, it does not return to Him until it has accomplished that for which it was sent, and He sent it forth telling the world to be filled and multiply, to subdue the earth and have it under subjection, saying that mankind and His creation was good, yet the catholics say all will go to heaven, there will be noone left on the earth, all of mankind will be either in heaven or hell. So if the Pope is the head of the Catholic Church, and he teaches things differently from what the Bible, Jesus and God do, who is the spirit telling him that "positively you will not die"?
