Kiawah Island is located at (32.609425, -80.097777). The town of Kiawah and Seabrook formed their own town but is not geographically separate from John's Island. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of 35.1 km sq (13.5 square miles). 28.9 km sq (11.2 mi sq) of it is land and 6.2 km sq (2.4 mi sq) of it (17.58%) is water. Kiawah was named for the Kiawah Indians who were led by head chieftain, Cassique. In the year 1670, Cassique leads English Colonists to settle at Charlestowne Landing.
