    To play defense in hockey, you need several pieces of equipment: a jock or jill strap, garter belt, shin pads, skates, shoulder pads, elbow pads, gloves, jersey, helmet, ice hockey shorts, stick and hockey bag. A visor or cage, mouth guard and neck guard are optional in most recreational leagues but may be mandatory in minor or college leagues.
