Saponins are the saps of certain plants, oddly enough plants in the Family Sapindaceae, also called soap plants, soapweed, soapberries and other "soap" names. The juices can be mixed with water to make a foamy sudsy soapy solution. They used to be used in making soaps and cleaners but have been mostly replaced with synthetics. Many shampoos still use them and advertize the fact. They are still used in out of the way places where folks still go down to the river, gather a bunch of soapweed and with a stick beat the clothes and weed in the water.
