Help answer this question below.
During menopause, estrogen levels decline steadily. Estrogen stimulates the formation of collagen and the production of oil in the skin. Less estrogen in the body means the skin retains less moisture. Without sufficient moisture, skin becomes dry and itchy.
Itchy skin may appear anywhere on the body, although it is most commonly noticed on the face and elbows.
Hormonal changes are just one common cause of dry skin during menopause. Itchy, dry skin can also be caused by other health problems such as hypothyroidism, diabetes, fungal infections or vitamin deficiencies.
Avoid harsh soaps that strip natural oils from the skin. Use moisturizers and sunscreen daily. Drink lots of water to hydrate the whole body, including the skin. Include essential fatty acids in a sensible diet.
If a balanced diet and a diligent skin care regimen do not improve itchy skin, it is important to see a doctor.
