Ideally, annual blood testing for vitamins D3 should be done during the fall through the winter seasons, when levels are at their lowest.
Blood testing may be ordered by a physician if calcium levels are suspected to be low. It may also be ordered if the patient has symptoms of vitamin D3 deficiency, which include bone malformation in children or bone weakness and fractures in adults.
Optimal vitamin D3 levels in the body should be between 50 to 70 ng/ml. Anything less is considered deficient, and greater levels are considered to be in excess.
The single most important fact every person should know about vitamin D is its source. The best way to raise your vitamin D3 level is by spending time in the sun. Vitamin D3 can also be obtained through foods, including cod liver oil, fortified milk, salmon, mackerel, sardines, egg yolks and beef liver.
For a vitamin D3 deficiency, adding a supplement of 1,000 IU daily may be sufficient. Higher doses may be prescribed by your health care provider. Adequate calcium and magnesium--as well as other minerals--are also critical parts of vitamin D3 therapy.
