Like some others have said, driving, or operating heavy machinery, things of the sort, yeah that can kill ya indeed. But overdosing on marijuana by smoking....no.

Although exercising poor judgment while under the influence of marijuana (i.e. driving or operating machinery while noticeably intoxicated) can result in a higher occurence of fatal mishaps, and heavy smokers can develop lung cancer, there is no fatal overdose for THC.

All of the other answers given to this question only look at the potential short-term consequences of smoking marijuana. However, one should also consider the potential long-term consequences. (I know, I know. It is very difficult to get someone who likes to get intoxicated to really think about the long-term consequences of their actions, but I am going to try.)

Smoke is inherently toxic. Smoldering tobacco, wood, marijuana always produces poisonous compounds and tar. When you inhale smoke you are pulling these compounds into your lungs. Over time this will damage your lungs. With tobacco smoke, it is not a single cigarette that kills; it is the cumulative damage cause by all of the cigarettes that the smoker smokes. Marijuana lacks the nicotine of tobacco, but you would still be inhaling all the other junk. This could eventually lead to the same kinds of damage as tobacco (i.e. emphysema, lung cancer, etc.).

I have heard of studies that indicated that smoking marijuana actually leads to a higher rate of lung disease than smoking tobacco does. It is true that marijuana smokers tend not to smoke it as much as tobacco smokers smoke tobacco. However, with marijuana, the smoker will also usually hold the smoke in their lungs longer when they take a hit. Thus each puff does more damage. Now I include this last paragraph as something to think about. I have not actually read the studies that I mentioned nor do I know where to find them. So, I really don't know how reliable this information is. However, I do know that marijuana smoke does contain most of the same poisons as tobacco smoke. Therefore, inhaling it can't be good for the long-term health of your lungs.

    ******************
"Grandma Roses: so, using candles, or a wood fireplace, are considered toxic activities?"

There is a difference between smoking and a candle or fire in a fireplace. When you take a drag on a joint, cigarette, etc. you are inhaling the concentrated smoke directly into your lungs. This brings with it the tar and other toxic substances in a concentrated form. On the other hand, when you light a candle, you usually don't hold you face over it and deliberately inhale the smoke. Thus the smoke rises and mixes with the rest of the air in the room. This greatly dilutes the accompanying tar and toxins to the point of the becoming negligible in concentration by the time you breath them. With a fire in a fire place, the smoke is supposed to go up the chimney and out of the house. So, once again, you are breathing negligible concentrations.

Basically, no. You would have to smoke much much more than would probably even be possible. THC at a certain level will kill you, but you would probably have to inject it. It has an LD50 (lethal dose for 50% of the population) of 42 milligrams per kilogram of body weight when smoked and 1270 mg/kg (male rats), 730 mg/kg (female rats) when injested orally. For comperison, caffine has an LD50 of 150-200mg/kg of body weight (one Coke has about 40mg in a 12oz can and coffee has 70-120mg per 8oz cup), meaning it would be quite a bit easier to die of caffine poisoning than THC.

If, while under the influence of marijuana, you drive, operate dangerous machinery, or engaeg in other potentially hazardous activities, your impaired judgement and reduced motor control could certainly result in a fatal mishap.

    No you can't.

There has never been a reported overdose, and if it was possible chances are it would have happened already.

You would have to smoke about 2lbs in one sitting and not loose any side stream smoke, along with that absorbing all the THC into your body.

Usually you loose a large portion of the THC while smoking, your body just doesn't absorb it all. You would also have to use 15% THC marijuana which a few hits of will usually make most people pass out.

You cannot overdose on it and kill yourself the way you can with heroin, cocaine or alcohol. There is strong suspicion it may cause lung cancer though, and obviously you should never undertake dangerous activities like driving while stoned.

ok thats false.. you cant die from coffee or overdose on caffine (however its spelt i just assume the guy above is smart) from the way he types he looks it but my mom has drank a pot to her self which is like 6 8 oz glasses.. and she is fine. caffine has been shown to actually be healthy for people when EVERYONE use to think it was bad for you (Dont believe me google it) I shouldnt have to do your own research.. THC OVER DOSE> not likelly you can pop a whole bottle of MORTIN and not die. Liver damage yes but you wont die. (Trust me I been to basic training kids pop whole bottles to go home all the time) You will never Over dose on weed because your lungs will get a feeling of "POOCHED lungs" which usually means you smoked a little to much. and its pretty hard to wanna take a drag of something when you have pooched lungs.. (a feeling where you feel full in your lungs) Jake you sound smart and everything but im sorry... your wrong.. THC doesnt have a LD if it does its nearlly impossible to reach and prob would cost more money then someone would want to smoke in a day... ( i personally have smoked an ounce in a day) im still here to type to you guys anyways... weed has been smoked since BEFORE the indians who used it to talk to there gods or spirtual crap... in all these hundreds of years no one has died.. its amazing aint it.. and if weed gives you cancer why they give weed to cancer patients in states that have the medical card? hmm..... something fishy is going on

There are some toxic substances in marijuana and some that are in marijuana acessories, but to get a lethal dose in one sitting of extended marijuna use would be quite difficult if not impossible.

As to what the clumulative affect of these poisons are I don't know - they may build up to a toxic level in your system over a period of time or they may not.

Execissive smoking of pot lowers lung function and capacity - putting stress on the body - which may lead to early failure of some organs, ( heart, lungs, arteries, etc. ), but this would depend upon how much you use for how long a period.

In some ways smoking pot is as bad as smoking tobacco, if people smoked pot in the same way and in the same amount as tobacco they would be likely to many of the same "smoking related sicknesses.

But of course - few people smoke 20 + joints a day like your average cigarette smoker. so serious health problems woudn't show up usually untill latter in life.

Not like they want you to believe, no.

If you have other healthrisks and also drink alcohol or smoke cigerettes or use other drugs, you are at high risk. But it is not likely you can die from marijuana alone.

Not from an overdose. It would take 900 average joints in one sitting to kill a 90 pound male from THC poisoning. But it can cause things like cancer, and heart/lung problems.

Yes, you can "die" or overdose from smoking too much marijuana. To overdose, you would have to smoke about 2/3 of your body weight in about 15 minutes even though a "lethal dose" is considered 1/3 of your body, but some of it is lost in the smoke.

Also, "marijuana" isn't bad for your lungs really; whatever you smoke that marijuana in might be bad such as a "blunt."

if the question is actually "can you overdose on smoking marijuana," then the answer is technically yes. Now, my understanding is that you have to smoke over 50 lbs in something like a half hour to do so, but in the history of the world, there are no accounts of someone overdosing on smoking weed. but long-term, yes, smoke of any kind is bad for your lungs. naturally, we flee from fire, unless huddling around it for warmth. smoke is bad, marijuana is not.

actually you have to smoke two thirds of your bodyweight to die which is impossible.

whats really strange is that marijuana smokers has a slightly smaller chance of gettin lungcancer and dozens of other cancers because some ingrediens actually kills tumors and stuff.

NO!!...smoko does not kill period or do any long term damage * yes all smoke is bad for your lungs,** and for it to do brain damage you would have to smoke 3 or more ounces per day everyday of the years, now yes if you operate machinery it can be dangerous BUT far less so than 90% of legal drugs...how do I know this ..from over 40years of smoking it and during that time I have heard so much bullshit about it and it is just bullshit and I will take on anyone who says its not ....any takers?

Yes. There have been several recorded cases in medical literature of fatal cardiac arrest following (or during) pot smoking, some of them in young (20 something) users who should not have had any cardiac problems.
It doesn't necessarily take an overdose of a drug to kill a person; your body just has to be sensitive to it in a way that affects important systems (like your heart, for example). Cannabis is known to effect the heart and circulatory system by constricting arteries, raising heart rate, raising blood pressure and causing palpitations/dysrhythmias of the heart.

It is easier to overdose on water, than it is THC, if that gives you an idea of how safe it is when compared to other chemicals.
There has never been a recorded death/overdose from cannabis, in the 10-15,000 years of known use. It is one of the least toxic substances known to man. However, the inhalation of any heated combustible material is never a very wise choice.

That said, you can cut practically all the suspected health risks involved with "smoking" cannabis, simply by administering it in another way. For example, vaporizers provide the rapid onset of effects previously only possible by smoking.

Cooking/eating cannabis is by far the safest and most effective method of administration, however it has not been very popular with cannabis users over the last century or so. Likely due to the fact that onset of effects take longer (20-60 mintues), and the effects are usually more intense and longer lasting, and people these days seem to have far busier lifestyles, thus prefer a drug that is quick and effective.

Prior to this new cultural preference to smoking substances, by far the most popular, if not one of the only recognized methods of administration was orally. People would often cook them into confectionery such as candy, chocolate, etc. It was also very popular to infuse alcohol with Cannabis (among many other psychoactive chemicals). But I digress :P

Basically my point is, we have been using cannabis in all its varieties for well over 10,000 years. If we haven't run into any major problems with it by now, I'd say we are pretty well in the clear.
