According to avc.edu, FTP allows photo transfer between a local computer and a remote server using a website address. This connection places the photo on the target website for display and often requires a username and password for upload permission.
FTP software, or an FTP client, displays the local files on a user's computer and requires the user to enter the address, login name and password of the remote server. Users may then upload the desired photos.
If the user is building her own website and wishes to upload a photo, she can do so with most web development software. These are designed much the same as FTP clients, with restricted access requiring an address, login name and password.
Social networking and other media sites allow users to upload photos by selecting the "Browse" button on their profiles. This process still uses the FTP method, but users do not need the login name and password of the remote server.
Some websites allow visitors to upload photos from their cell phones. In this case, users email the photo to the website and receive a password or confirmation code which gives them access to post their photo on the website.
