I've noticed that people often seem to assume that things automatically apply to the USA, but we are using a forum that is world-wide! what reasons might contribute to this? does anybody else think that makes americans look like arrogant a**holes?

most people generally assume that within certain boundaries, everything that applies to them, applies to everyone else.. the broader the boundaries, the stranger one ends up being (in general) and most cultures have the mistaken idea that to be simultaneously perfectly 'normal' (average) and slightly above average (usually in only one or two areas) is the highest form of human achievement... (exceptions to this are usually categorized as genius or insane(or criminal), depending on how well their achievements fit into what the majority of the surrounding population admire/can comprehend/accept) is it arrogance really, to assume? or is it simply sadly limiting to potential?

Why would you lump all Americans into a category like that because of something a few did...ever stop to think how that makes YOU look?

- damn, good point! but i'm not saying that everybody does that, i'm just saying that i've noticed that it happens often. btw, i am an american and am not trying to attack the people here, but it does seem odd to me. even the fact that we call ourselves americans is a little odd when you think about all the people in north and south america that wouldn't be considered americans. do you see where i am going with this?

- good to hear... if only my tone of voice could come across in the questions. that would've probably helped. it's funny how many different ways one can interpret the same sentence or question sometimes. it's hard to tell without hearing somebody's tone of voice or seeing their body language.

As long as Americans are treating every foreigner liked an ...hole they should not wonder that they are regarded the same way.
It is the Americans who look down with their arrogance and their felt superiority to other people and what do you expect from people being regarded by the Americans as an ...hole?
Should they be friendly and kiss your feet?

Why do so many people automatically assume the guy is the asshole in a relationship just because the girl is hurt? The guy isn't always the asshole, and the girl might have done something to contribute to the problem. Has anyone else noticed this?
