Traditional Cherokee clothing changed based upon the time of year. Most clothing was made from deer skin, woven cloth and Cherokee plant leaves. Animal fur was also used in clothing for the winter. Dresses were made to be free flowing to make movement easier. This made bending easier without having to worry about tucking in garment. Short sleeved dresses similar to today's sheet dress. Hand woven belts are worn at waist. Skirts made from bark strips, hemp and woven mulberry bark. Deerskin was also used. Tops were made from deer skin, which was tanned. Pants made from tanned deer skin worn like clouts women wear, for these were made long. Uncomplicated belts made of deer skin included a pouch and knife sleeve. Long sleeved shirts made out tanned deer skin. The Ribbon Shirt, still worn today by various dancers, is made from calico woven cotton cloth. Ribbon designs accent the front and back of shirt. Were made out of woven material. Some of the robes were made out of animal fur to provide more warm from the harsh weather. Made out of tanned animal skin. Both males and females wore them. Women's were made to lace up to their knees. Women of distinction had colored seed-beads decorating theirs. Male moccasins were front-seamed and made of tanned leather.Women's Dresses
