    Great Answer

    Professionally Researched. (What's this?)

Guitar straps attach to the body of the guitar. Most guitars have knobs at the rear and near the neck for guitar straps. The straps have a slit in each end to slide over the knobs, and thus hold the instrument in place.

    Strings Attached

Guitar straps often come with laces because some acoustic guitars do not have a strap knob near the neck. The laces are then tied around the headstock of the guitar, underneath the strings.

    No Knobs

In rare occurrences, an acoustic guitar will have no knobs to attach a strap to. Players typically will insert a screw to compensate or have a luthier install a knob.

    Lock Up

Many guitarists install strap locks, which minimize the chance of the strap detaching from the guitar while performing.

    Homemade Straps

Homemade straps can be made out of belts or pieces of fabric. Strands of rope were once popular with banjo players.

    Benefits

When attached and adjusted correctly, a strap provides comfort and promotes good posture. It alleviates strains on the neck, back and shoulders.
