Guitar straps often come with laces because some acoustic guitars do not have a strap knob near the neck. The laces are then tied around the headstock of the guitar, underneath the strings.
In rare occurrences, an acoustic guitar will have no knobs to attach a strap to. Players typically will insert a screw to compensate or have a luthier install a knob.
Many guitarists install strap locks, which minimize the chance of the strap detaching from the guitar while performing.
Homemade straps can be made out of belts or pieces of fabric. Strands of rope were once popular with banjo players.
When attached and adjusted correctly, a strap provides comfort and promotes good posture. It alleviates strains on the neck, back and shoulders.
