For most women, ovulation and menstruation resumes five to six weeks after delivery, according to What to Expect When You're Expecting. This can vary considerably based on factors such as stress, activity level, medications and weight gain or loss. The variable that has the greatest affect on this timing, however, is breastfeeding.
New mothers who choose to breastfeed may experience a delay in their menstrual cycle that lasts up to several months. But again, this is highly variable among women. While some breastfeeding mothers have no period for the entire span of time in which they are regularly nursing, many will resume menstruation around the sixth postpartum month, according to the International Planned Parenthood Federation. While this cessation of menstruation provides a level of birth control, it should be noted that ovulation occurs before the first period, and pregnancy can occur at that time.
Since so many factors affect when a postpartum will resume ovulation and menstruation, it's difficult to predict when this will happen for any particular woman. Consult your physician to discuss appropriate healthcare and birth control during this time period.
