    Free-floating single-cell algae, as skeeter indicates. If you wish to avoid chemicals, you may try measures described in the article. Another old trick was to turn off the tank light and tape black construction paper over every facet of glass.

    Algae will form in any tank if your filter is not working properly, or if there is a build-up of excess food and/or fish crap. See the pet shop guy about it.
