It stimulates the uterus to start shedding the uterine lining - in other words, it starts your period, thus removing any environment an embryo could grow in, and removing the zygote planted in the uterine wall, if by chance you have become 'pregnant'. Correction: It works to stop the eggs being produced by the ovaries, prevent sperm reaching the egg and alter the uterine lining so that the uterus is inhospitable to an egg.
