I don't know of a cruise ship which capsized in the '70s however there maybe a few events you have confused and combined.
There was a disaster movie released in 1972 named 'The Poseidon Adventure' about a cruise ship which capsizes.
On November 10th, 1975, one of the largest cargo vessels on the great lakes, the Edmund Fitzgerald, sunk in lake Superior with all 29 hands lost. In 1976 singer songwriter Gordon Lightfoot released a song about the accident named 'The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald' which became a very popular.
I think you're thinking of the Edmund Fitzgerald. It wasn't a cruise ship, it was an ore carrier on Lake Superior that broke up in heavy seas. The song "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" is by Gordon Lightfoot.
