I put the TV on, with low volume and watch a boring show or movie. It works for me.

The worst you can do is to worry about it. Get a tiny AM radio next to your pillow and turn it on with a slow volume on a talk radio show. Just imagine that you are sitting in an audience listening to them. Relax, imagine that you are laying back on a very comfortable chair. You will fall asleep faster than you are expecting.

I think of nice things and make up a little story, not too complicated and imagine myself in the story and I usually just drift to sleep without realizing it. And because I was trying to think good thoughts, nice things, I have pleasant dreams and wake up feeling better. I try to be careful what I last watch on TV and make sure it isn't anything too exciting or upsetting. I find seeing the news is NOT a good idea as it gets my mind all focused on things I can't do anything about.

I don't know. I haven't slept in 3 days. Usually if I'm depressed I sleep nonstop. This time I just can't turn thoughts off enough to drop off. I've tried ear plugs, sleep mask, background noise, sleep drugs, computer, reading, music, counting sheep. Nothing helps.

I subconsciously think. In philosophical terms this state is called the "Zombie" taking over your consciousness. In the philosophical world there are 2 you's. Conscious you, and subconscious you. Ever notice that when you stop thinking about doing a mindless remedial task you kinda automatically just DO IT without thinking and your mind goes off somewhere else? If you stop thinking about everything and get into a comfy position in bed, your 'Zombie' will take over your senses (hearing gets fuzzy for example) and your subconscious will start to think out loud in your head. As long as your conscious doesn't decide to kick in, you'll dose off almost instantly. The only downfall I see from it is that when I do that (which is practically every night) i don't remember any of my dreams at ALL. In other words i go to bed, everything goes black, i wake up, its morning.
