    Asker's Pick

Selected by the asker, marzybarzy. (What's this?)

Make your bedroom and bed as comfortable for yourself as possible. I haven't been able to sleep well since 2005. Now I have to have some noise, usually the television but a radio will do. I know that some people like complete silence or complete darkness but for me I don't want to hear the quiet.

Try Chamomile tea or capsule, you'll get it from VITAMIN SHOPPE. OR read some good books, OR listen to smooth and quiet music and have a good night sleep.

Lots of good answers here. Some swear by exercise before bed, for others, the adrenaline keeps them up. Also, this is sort of embarrassing to say, but sexual release can help one get to sleep.

As a last resort, if your lack of sleep is interferring with your waking life, consult a doctor. You may need a mild sleep aid, although most of them suck and leave you waking up more tired and sluggish than when you went to bed.

Ambien and other drugs your doctor can prescribe will do it, but aren't good to use regularly.

Don't read or watch TV in bed, only go there to fall asleep. Meditate...learn to clear your mind. If you go to bed and can't sleep - get back up for a while and do something boring....read a really bad book or something.

If possible, get into bed 2 hours earlier than planned. Then you should have less anxiety over lying awake and missing sleep, since time is not an issue. If you do drift off early then maybe you will wake up early as well. There are an incredible number of things you can do with an early start. No that will not automatically work for everyone, but I use that method to get some shuteye around 24-hour on-call pager duty.

I actually have friends who buy that stuff by the bottle and take it every night. I usually also try not to shower right before bed for some reason it seems to wake me up more and I stared working out more to make sure my body is tired it seems to help me.

try working out during the day. do something physical for 2 hours to exhaust yourself. Do this in the afternoon. and by night u'll be nice and sleepy. if you do this often enough you will train your body to sleep ant a certain time. and its healthy for you Or you could smoke weed.. that always works.

There are a number of things that can contribute to how well you sleep.

Make sure that your room is super dark, and don't use your room for anything besides sleeping. This helps your brain trigger that it's time for bed.
A few hours before bed, DON'T eat, drink alcohol or coffee, smoke or excercise. These things may be too stimulating and keep you up.
Don't sleep in a really warm room, keep it cool and have blankets if you need them. Your body temperature should drop when you are ready for bed. Also, take a really hot bath or shower about 90 minutes before you plan to sleep. The subsequent drop in body temperature afterward can make you tired.
Drinking warm milk actually does make you sleepier.
In the long term, try to stick to a sleep schedule that has you going to bed and getting up at the same time every day (even on weekends).
You should never lie in bed trying to sleep for more than 20 minutes, it doesn't help. Get up and try to do something boring in LOW LIGHT, to see if that gets you tired.
I hope something here helps, I know how frustrating it can be. Good Luck!

The coffee you drink during the day to stay awake might just be whats making you have a hard time sleeping no matter how tired you are. Try not having any coffee after 3pm and see if that works.
Try a nice warm bath before you go to bed. That always works for me

I like to play fairly simple word games to take my mind off more insomnia-causing thoughts.

One of my favourites is to think of famous people whose first and last names begin with the same letter, and go through the alphabet.

Alan Alda, Brigitte Bardot, Carol Channing, etc.

    Remedy for sleep?

Caffiene... Continual munching (doesn't help the weight)... NOT sitting and laying around...

OH! You meant for FALLING asleep (the remedy for wakefulness)... Uh... Warm milk... VERY quiet room (or a light "white noise")... Close your eyes as soon as your head hits the pillow and KEEP them closed.... Don't MOVE AROUND unless you absolutely HAVE to... Picture a blank movie screen in your head, and concentrate on it, not allowing other thoughts to intrude on that nothingness... Tense muscles for a couple of seconds and release them, starting from your toes, to feet, to ankles, to calves... to face (you should probably never get there)... COUNT. (Imaging counting contests in your head... count to 500 by ones... If you get THERE, count BACKWARDS... If you get to 0... go by twos... then threes... then fours... (You should probably never get past the the threes).

RELAX! Let the sleep wash over you! ;-)

If it is the middle of the night and you are tossing and turning in your bed......

don't force yourself to go to sleep....you won't.

Get up, walk to the kitchen, get some milk and crackers, and either take a couple of advil or tylenol...go into where your tv is....keep the room dark, eat your milk and crackers and take your meds...lay down on the couch or recliner...wherever you are comfortable. Turn your tv on to something you like but keep the volume low, and I promise you will relax and go to sleep!! Good night!!

Save ALL your chores for just before bedtime. Do them, them take a hot shower (or bath), and lay down with a good book that you know you will read. You should be out within about 20 to 30 minutes. Good luck.

It helps alot to have a "system." When I go to bed, I always lay on my back first, for about 5 minutes. I allow my body to just relax, feels like my bones are settling. Then when I start to feel a little groggy, I just roll over and ... I'm gone!

My friend just recently told me what she does: While she's laying in bed, she just imagines "turning off" all parts of her body, starting at her toes and feet, then knees, hips, fingers, hands, shoulders, back, stomach, etc. Go slowly and bore yourself (that's the point besides relaxing yourself). You will end up boring yourself to sleep. Do not uner any circumstances, allow yourself to think about anything else: missing library books, unpaid bills, unanswered emails, etc. Focus only on your toes, feet, knees, zzzzz

Prime wants the old AB back

Great question since it looks like lots of insomniacs on AB like myself. Ground ivy tea works well, meditation, camomile (sp?) kind of works. There is a new herbal sleep pill on the market that contains valerian (sp? again, sorry) that works pretty well. The prob. with most sleep meds is that they have side effects and often stop working after a while. Oh yes, almost forgot, warm milk does work if you can bring yourself to drink it.

Warm milk is a natural, effective sedative. You can also try turning off all electronic devices and stimuli a few hours before bed so your brain settles. Otherwise, there's always great sex or some creative masturbation (if you're a guy). =)
