Help answer this question below.
I ditto the answer that it's not really possible without cutting it off. However, a myth about epilepsy says that one can swallow one's tongue during a seizure, and I wanted to point out that it is a myth. What happens is exactly what was said. The tongue blocks the airway. This can be prevented by turning the seizing person on his/her side. Do not attempt to insert anything into the mouth, because the person's teeth will clamp and you may be badly bitten.
It's not possible to actually swallow your own tongue (unless you cut it off first, of course). It is, however, possible to suffocate from your own tongue if you're unconscious and your tongue falls back into your throat.
You are all actually incorrect. There are some people who can swallow their tongue as a sort of "freak" talent. I happen to be one of them. just look on youtube.com and you can witness some of our freak talents.. Next time research things before you answer people!
Danielle
Its flat out impossible while its attatched
You are all wrong. The people who can put their tongues behind their uvula and past their tonsils aren't swallowing it but are putting it up into their nasal passages. What can be felt when one does this are the adenoids, both nasal passages and the bone that separates the passages. That's all. It's not going DOWN the throat it's going UP into the nasal cavities. I know this because I can do it. More people than you think can do it, just look on youtube. But as you can see ALL their tongues are going back and UP not back and DOWN.
i can actually swallow my tongue, im not joking
Anthony Hopkins can make it happen. :P
actually you are all wrong, i shit my tongue... so its possible!!
Its obviously possible... but at first u have to bite it off !!! then death may occur due to blood loss... There are better options people so " Don't try this at home "... ha ha ha !!!! :)
Its actually impossible to SWALLOW your own tongue. Danielle does not actually know what the word "swallow" means apparently. Swallow means "To pass through one's esophagus" If these people on youtube swallowed their own tongue according to Danielle, it would pass through their esophagus and this would only be possible if their tongues were disconnected from their bodies. The people on youtube simple fold their tongue backward and it is indeed hidden at the top of their throat. It is impressive, but it is not swallowing.
Next time research things before you attempt to tell people to research things and make yourself look cool and smart Danielle.
Feel the little latch or piece of skin attaching your tongue to the bottom of your mouth. OR try to swallow your own....hahah it is impossible. It may cut off air flow after the muscles relax. Some people are so gullable and believe everything they hear. Suckers!!!
I heard that, back in the day, you know when they made people bite down on something... like a piece of wood, when they were going to do a 'medical procedure' (this can be a C-section or cauterising a wound etc)? It's because severe pain often makes you clench your jaws so to stop the patient from biting off the end of their tongue and choking on it, they gave them something to bite down on instead...
You are ALL totally incorrect. Swallowing your tongue is an ancient way to commit suicide in order to escape torture. Here's the rub: You must first bite it off. Death occurs from blood loss. The act of swallowing it conceals your intention from your captors, who may try to intervene. Hence the invention of the ball gag, which prevents biting.
I can swallow my tounge and touch my tonisls!!!!
You would have-to be real real hungry.. I s'pose...
You can't because I learned in fire school it's attached to part of your jaw bone making it impossible. So if you witness anyone with a seizure they will not swallow their tongue so please don't make the mistake of sticking something in their mouth because you cannot swallow your tongue.
epyleptics have the tendancy to bite their tongues not swallow them.i've been epyleptic since i was 14 years old and during a siezure they would put something in my mouth to prevent me from biting my tongue.the miracle of drugs has kept me seixure free for many many years
I bag to differ as a matter of fact it is actually possible to swallow your own tongue. I know for a fact because when I was a baby I actually did swallow my own tongue, and I almost died from it. Luckily my dad was able to get my tongue out of my throat and save my life. So next time you try to say that something is not possible, make sure you actually know what the fuck your talking about first.
Cut it off and swallow it...promblem solved
Actually the Tongue can go down your throat while vomiting or throwing up. This is because while vomiting your tongue loses it's muscles.
It is possibal to swallow you tonge if your in a eplectic seizure
It is not possible to actually "swallow your tongue". In such cases as epilepsy, the tongue may fall back against the windpipe and may appear to the observer as being swallowed. Thats why you should always turn a person on their side when they are having a seizure, so the tongue does not fall back.
