Early detection and treatment improve your survival rate. According to Cancer Research UK, the five year survival rate for Stage 1a is 58 to 73 percent. Stage 1b has a 43 to 58 percent chance of living five or more years. Stage 2a lung cancer drops the five year survival chance to 36 to 46 percent, while Stage 2b has a five year survival rate of 25 to 36 percent. According to the Mayo Clinic, "Lung cancer claims more lives each year than colon, prostate, ovarian, lymph and breast cancers combined." Survival rates for lung cancer are low in part because it is often diagnosed in a late stage. For Stage 3 only 9 to 13 percent of patients live five years. Stage 4's five year survival rate drops to 1 percent. Although early detection and treatment offer the best outcome, overall the survival rate is among the lowest of all types of cancers. According to the Mayo Clinic, lung cancer is fatal in most cases. On One Hand: Early Detection
