My mother always said " 'Nice' is only something you say when you can't think of a better adjective, or don't want to be impolite". Do you agree or disagree?

I tend to agree. Nice is so over-used that it has become meaningless...or synonymous with "It doesn't suck."

I disagree. I use it when I think something or someone is nice not because I can't think of anything better to say or just to be polite. If I say nice, I mean nice.

Hi, Miss Penny...I disagree with mom, but in a respectful way. I would substitute the word "interesting"...sometimes something is gawdawful and you can't be honest because you don't want to hurt someone..so you say (to buy time until you can think of something else, anything else, to say) by saying, "my, that is very interesting"..and hopefully the other person will take that as a positive thing. I like the word "nice"..I think it stands on its own as meaningful, as long as it actually represents what you believe.
