1. Pro-estrus (swelling of the vulva, clear discharge that turns bloody) 8 to 13 days. 2. Estrus (normally bleeding has stopped. Vulva less turgid, but still swollen. NOW is when the bitch is receptive to breeding most likely and to conception) 4 to 7 days. 3.Metestrus (when puppies are growing, if successfully bred. Also time with false pregnancy can happen) 6 to 10 weeks. 4. Anestrus (quiet period of variable duration when there is no activity in the bitch's reproductive tract) 15 weeks. There is No bleeding at all during this time, unless something is wrong. Unless you are or plan to show your bitch, hopefully earn points and titles to PROVE that you should consider breeding her...you should get her spayed after the first heat. (when you will be VERY, VERY CAREFUL not to let her be bred!) Spaying means that you cut way back on the chance that your beloved girl will get BREAST CANCER later on in life and removes the chance that she will get uterine cancer at all! SHE could give a rat's butt about having puppies, she is NOT pondering motherhood at all...believe me on this! Irresponsible backyard breeders CONTRIBUTE to puppies and dogs being born that stand a good chance of ending up in the POUND at some point in time. If you doubt me, take a little trip to your local pound and check out all the beautiful, great dogs there. MANY of them are purebred animals. The ones that pass go to the adoption row, but if they are not chosen within ONE WEEK...they go to the death room and get the shot that puts them down. A dead puppy or dog is NOT a cute puppy or dog...it's just one more out of SEVERAL HUNDRED that are put down EVERY SINGLE WEEK OF THE YEAR IN THE USA. Be sure you search your heart and ask what your goal is if you ARE considering breeding your Bitch. The only "rich" breeders I know all had their money before they had their dogs! GOOD BREEDERS are responsible, they show their dogs and bitches to earn their titles and points and PROVE that their animals will IMPROVE and CONTRIBUTE some outstanding quality to the breed. They RESEARCH the dog or bitch's bloodlines as hard as they have their own to choose ONLY THE BEST TO BETTER THE WHOLE! SPAYING AND NEUTERING PROTECTS YOUR BITCH OR DOG FROM CANCER...This is really worth thinking long and hard about! AND FYI....with animals it's not called a period...it's called IN HEAT, OR IN SEASON. If you are just starting out and plan to show and get to know other RESPONSIBLE BREEDERS...use the right terms...so you appear professional too!
