Acer computers are gaining market share compared with the large PC manufacturers, such as Dell, Gateway and Hewlett-Packard. Acer provides a licensed copy of the latest Microsoft operating system preinstalled for the user's convenience. Acer manufactures desktop and laptop computers for a considerable discount compared with major PC manufacturers. Acer computers do not use industrial-strength hardware. Acer hardware lacks a rigorous QA test cycle in the factory and is more prone to problems than leading commercial hardware. Typically, a major hardware malfunction causes a laptop computer to be useless, and repairs are costly because the entire laptop has to be taken apart to fix it. Acer laptops and desktops are good at non-critical computer tasks. This includes watching DVDs, playing video games, and online social networking. An Acer computer would be an excellent fit for children for educational purposes or for playing games. However, since the hardware is a cheaper quality, they should not be used for business-critical computing that depends upon high-performing and reliable hardware.
