  • Advent is the season before Christmas. It lasts for four weeks (well, four Sundays time before Christmas). It is the time of waiting for Christ's birth. Well, not literally, but of remembering it and feeling hopeful. It is easy to calculate. Just find the 24th of December on the calendar. The Sunday before the 24th is the 4th Sunday of Advent and it if the 24th is a Sunday, that is the 4th Sunday of Advent. The Sunday before that is the third, then the Sunday before that is the 2nd, then the Sunday before that is the first Sunday and the first day of Advent.
  • Advent comes from the Latin advenire-oncoming. It is the four weeks celebrating the oncoming/upcoming feast of the birth of Jesus. Four Sundays are included in Advent, and it is the custom in many christian cultures to do something special to commemorate the passing of each sunday (eg light a candle-Germany).
