As I arrived here looking for the answer to a question I'd say the latter. I think the points are just a bit of fun on the side of other fun.

It's purpose is to share information by answering each others questions, but there is now a big focus on acquiring points, which I think takes away some of the true spirit of AB, with some people going for quantity over quality. The thing that really boggles me is that some of the questions that are awarded *huge* numbers of points are those that aren't helpful in the slightest, whereas questions that can genuinely help someone in a real spot of trouble go unanswered/unnoticed.

It's really not completely one of those things. A lot of people have more than one reason for using asnswerbag. I like to get points because I enjoy the feeling of gradual advancment, but I also just like to talk to people. So, it all depends on who you ask.
