  • Junk food- is a term describing food that is perceived to be unhealthy or having poor nutritional value, according to Food Standards Agency , the term is believed to have been coined by Michael Jacobson, director of the Centre for Science in the Public Interest, in 1972.[1] The term has since become common usage. Junk food typically contains high levels of fat, salt or sugar and numerous food additives such as monosodium glutamate and tartrazine; at the same time, it is lacking in proteins, vitamins and fiber, among others. It is popular with suppliers because it is relatively cheap to manufacture, has a long shelf life and may not require refrigeration. It is popular with consumers because it is easy to purchase, requires little or no preparation, is convenient to consume and has lots of flavor. Consumption of junk food is associated with obesity, heart disease, Type 2 diabetes and dental cavities. There is also concern about the targeting of marketing at children. ------------------------------------------------- Eating healthy food- is the practice of making choices about what to eat with the intent of improving or maintaining good health. Usually this involves consuming necessary nutrients by eating the appropriate amounts from all of the food groups. Since human nutrition is complex a healthy diet may vary widely subject to an individual's genetic makeup, environment, and health. For around 20% of the planet's population, lack of food and malnutrition are the main impediments to healthy eating.
  • Not scientific here, just my opinion: I guess Junk Food has: Less nutritional value, More saturated fat, Preservatives, Lots more calories per serving, More than the necessary ammount of daily sodium in one serving (sugar too if you count the soda). All said I love to indulge myself maybe 3 times a week ;)
  • Foods high in fat and sugar and not containing much nutritional value.
  • I am sure most of what I eat, ready made meals high in salts fats and sugars
  • Junk food is a slang word for foods with limited nutritional value. Every person has their own list of foods that they call junk foods. I would include foods that are high in salt, sugar, fat or calories and low nutrient content. Salted snack foods, candy, gum, most sweet desserts, fried fast food and carbonated beverages are some of the major junk foods. Generally, they offer little in terms of protein, vitamins or minerals and lots of calories from sugar or fat. The term "empty calories" reflects the lack of nutrients. http://www.dietitian.com/junkfood.html
